Personal Injury Protection

We like to think we are invincible but accidents happen all the time so even if you are the safest driver, it is worth taking out personal injury protection. This becomes increasingly important when you have a family that depends on you and mortgage repayment responsibilities to name a few examples. Often personal injury protection or PIP is incorporated into a larger insurance policy which may cover disability, life and terminal illness for instance but can be a stand alone plan as well. Unfortunately, any insurance policy is expensive (no matter how important) and many of the most vulnerable families that this would benefit just cannot afford to add another plan to their portfolio.

Unfortunately however, it can be very costly in other ways if the cover is not appropriate or does not cover the intended items. Not every state has made this law yet but a few have although the amount of protection does vary considerably. This difference is highlighted by the amount of cover required by a driver in Alaska being ten times the amount required by a similar driver in Florida. Many people take out personal injury protection plans even if they currently live in a state that does not require it by law.

With a huge four fifths paid out to the insured, it is not surprising the plans are costly especially when it covers all passengers too. With this type of plan it doesn't even matter if the person responsible for the accident was the policy holder because it will pay all medical bills, lost wages etc., even for the passengers. Owing the cost element in setting up insurance plans like this, it is worthwhile inspecting any current arrangements you have to see if there are areas already protected to keep the expense down. Items like the medical expenses and lost income are already part of a current health plan that is in force.

If this is the case, then you may need minimal amount of coverage or even none at all. Drivers that have more than their fair share of accidents are more likely to require personal injury protection even though it may cost them more. Health insurance plans will often cover the main policy holder as the driver and providing the passengers are relatives, it will usually cover them as well if they are injured. You will need to check these details and not hope for the best because if the personal injury protection does not extend to them adequately, there could be problems.

Remember, the safety of a passenger in your car is always going to be your responsibility. Ensuring you have adequate personal injury protection if you are a driver should not just be about the legal requirement for you to have it, even if you are in a state that has not made it mandatory yet. This is one area where age and driving experience can be on the driver's side and insurance policy costs can be lowered. Younger drivers however, do not fair so well if they are inexperienced with little insurance cover in place but they are often in greater need of good health insurance cover to protect themselves and any family they have.
